The Good, The Bad and The Ugly: Lesson #4

We each bring something unique and critical to the success of TEAMride.  It has been fun to see how our personality traits have segued into key roles in the business.  We have decided that identifying your strengths and weaknesses early on is a major factor in the eventual success or demise of your business.  There are amazing checks-and-balances that occur when you have the right group of people working together.  The give and take seems effortless; one person’s weakness is taken up by another’s strength. Lucky for us, the four of us work well together; otherwise, things could get scary.

Lesson #4:
The “We are glad we all balance one another out, otherwise we’d be broke, not talking and business-less” Lesson

“It’s 8:01, you’re officially late.  If you were my employee you would be fired.” -Michelle via text message to Elena

Elena arrives at the dining room table aka “the office” a few minutes later, coffee cup in hand and a smile on her face.

How’s that for checks-and-balances?

Michelle’s strengths are clear. She is efficient, punctual, manages multiple tasks with ease and knows how to delegate.  Her years of work in the corporate world make her an invaluable resource for our business. With her around, our productivity level is at an all-time high J She and Elena work extremely well together because Elena is a real doer and she never says “No,” no matter the task.  She may appear to lack initiative but she sure can execute, with a smile and uncanny sense of calm.  She frequently stops Michelle from freaking out by reminding her, “We are not a multi-billion dollar corporation, we are a small business, relax, have fun.” Checks-and-balances.

While we are all friendly and social girls, Teresa is THE people person. When none of us wants to put on a “happy face,” we can depend on Tere to talk to anyone, at any time, about anything.  She promotes our business at any opportunity and that is exactly what a small business needs... an advocate.  This “over-sharing” does have one downside; she is inevitably tardy on her work days at TEAMride HQ because she spent 20 minutes chatting in some parking lot “drumming up business!” With an excuse like that it is hard to get mad. If it weren’t for Teresa, we would have a more challenging time spreading the word. Checks-and-balances.

Alicia and Teresa balance one another on the money front. If it was up to Alicia, our floors would be tile flown in from Italy and chandeliers would be hung wherever possible. If it was up to Teresa, our interior would look as sterile and uninteresting as a hospital. Thankfully, they can find a happy medium. Teresa watches the bottom line and questions every monetary decision; annoying sometimes, but incredibly smart in the long run. Alicia finds discounts where she can and has scaled down her tastes for the sake of Teresa’s blood pressure. Checks-and-balances.

Varying strengths and personalities make for one hell of a TEAM. We hope you all agree!

The Good, The Bad and The Ugly: Lesson #3

People start businesses out of their garage all the time…right?  We can tell you at least one has!  TEAMride has started in a garage and a home.  Our Mother’s that is!  We had no idea, nor did she, that when we decided to start a business her house would become intimately involved.  Our Mother’s house and her heart have welcomed TEAMride and we have built our headquarters there for the past 8 months!

Lesson #3
The “When Your Space is Under Construction and No Packages Can be Delivered There…Let’s Hope You Have an Awesome Mom” Lesson

If we had formally asked our Mother 8 months ago if we could have 35 bikes, boxes of towels, shoes, weights and more piled in her garage and dining room we are pretty sure the answer would have been “No!” The fact that this chaos has been delivered slowly is perhaps our saving grace.

Truly, though, 760 Laurel Dr. has become TEAMride Headquarters.  Her family room hosts weekly “training” rides with our instructors and 8-10 bikes have become more-or-less permanent fixtures in that room.  The dining room is our “office” with coffee cups and piles of paperwork strewn everywhere.  Our Mother has taken this all in stride.  She occasionally has a “freak-out” but who can blame her.  Frankly we are all surprised how well she is handling this, although there is really no alternative!  As we expectantly wait for TEAMride’s true home to be complete a small part of us will miss this stage: Having Mother moving about the house as we conduct business, being pleasantly surprised by a green drink when we need an afternoon “pick-me-up” or a meal served in the “office” just as we thought we couldn’t push on.  Our Mother, on the other hand, we are sure will not miss a single box, pile of paper or having to park outside!

Here’s to her: our Mother.  The one who dreams right along with us no matter how bumpy or intrusive the ride!

GETTING TO KNOW THE TEAM

Today we highlight another one of our fabulous instructors in our "Getting to Know the TEAM" series! Heather's warm and calming presence is a joy to be around and we wouldn't be surprised if you walk out of her class wanting to be her best friend!

Spotlight on Instructor, Heather Hayes

Heather graduated with a BA in Interior Architecture, although, she wishes she were a professional dancer :) She has a four-year-old son, Tyler and her sign is Scorpio, so she says she can get pretty intense about things she believes in. Heather lived in South Lake Tahoe for 6 years and spent her winters as a competitive snowboarder.

1)  If you could be any fictional character, who would you choose? Aeon Flux
2)  If you were stranded on a lonely beach, what are the 5 things that you would want to survive? Solar laptop (they exist!), I guess I'd need sunglasses, the hunger games trilogy (does that count as one?) economy pack of lighters and a tarp.
3)  What is the #1 most played song on your iPod? Black Eyed Peas, I just can't get enough
4)  If you could learn to do anything, what would it be? Speak Italian (I've tried)
5)  If you won the lottery, what is the 1st thing you would do? Sail around the world on a yacht, fully staffed of course.
6)  What is one of your favorite quotes? "When it rains or shines, it's just a state of mind" The Beatles, "Rain"

The Good, The Bad and The Ugly: Lesson #2

With any new business, the question we get asked most often is, “When will you be opening?” A simple enough question but an extremely difficult one to answer. Originally the answer was June 14th, then September 22nd, then October 13th.  We’re still not open and today is October 30th...

Lesson #2
The “Take Your Initial Grand Opening Date, Add 10 Visits to the City Permit Office, Tack on Half a Year for Good Measure and then You Might Actually Be Opening” Lesson.
(Equation subject to change depending on when our doors actually open)

Some businesses seem to pop-up overnight, a storefront vacant and within months it is filled.  That has not been the case for TEAMride. We were prepared for an October 13th opening: launched our website and all social media, went to local businesses with fliers and we even went so far as to announce this date to all of you!  Whoops, fake-out!

The point is, when you are starting a business, good intentions and the best laid plans don’t always sync-up with all the other factors outside of your control.  Some say, timing is everything.  We say, timing is tricky.  We made a mistake but we’re rolling with it.  To say it has been frustrating is an understatement.  We are so ready to bring TEAMride alive with all of you; to see our dream in reality.  In the meantime, time keeps ridin’ on and we do too!

Check back next Tuesday for Lesson #3. Click here to read Lesson #1 if you missed it!

GETTING TO KNOW THE TEAM

Today we highlight our second instructor on our "Getting to Know the TEAM" series.  As soon as we heard that Molly had moved to Sacramento to try something new, we knew we wanted that kind of spontaneity on our TEAM.  She is bringing the East Coast to Sacramento and we know you will all love her as much as we do!

Spotlight on Instructor, Molly Klores

Molly recently received a BS in Neuroscience and moved to Davis from Washington, D.C., to pursue veterinary medicine. She is thrilled to be a part of TEAMride because of her love of music as well as indoor cycling, and is excited to meet new people in the area! In her spare time, she enjoys running, drawing, and traveling (especially to beaches!).

1) If you could be any fictional character, who would you choose? Beatrix Kiddo from Kill Bill. I love her intensity and devotion to her daughter (and having Uma Thurman’s legs wouldn’t be too bad either)
2) If you were stranded on a lonely beach, what are the 5 things that you would want to survive? Assuming I couldn’t bring my friends and family, I would want: Anything that could play music, An infinite supply of white nectarines, My bike, A bath tub (with bubbles), My boxer, Nina
3) What is the #1 most played song on your iPod? You Can’t Always Get What You Want, by the Rolling Stones. My mom used to sing it to me when I was a kid!
4) If you could learn to do anything, what would it be? Ice-skate. It seems so elegant to me.
5) If you won the lottery, what is the 1st thing you would do? Plan a trip around the world.
6) What is one of your favorite quotes? “Every act of perception, is to some degree an act of creation, and every act of memory is to some degree an act of imagination.” – Oliver Sacks

The Good, The Bad and The Ugly

We’ve heard it all: “You girls are nuts!” “Do you have ANY idea how hard it is to own your own business?” “Do you even know what you’re doing?” To all this we say, “yes, we are a little nuts, it’s harder than we could have imagined and we’re learning everything necessary along the way.” The truth is, you have to be a little nuts to do this, and we’re okay with that.

For the next few weeks, we are going to highlight some of the biggest lessons we've learned while building TEAMride. Whether you aspire to one day own your own business or not, enjoy these tidbits from 4 sisters dreaming big.

LESSON #1:
The “Thank goodness we are sisters otherwise one of us would be dead” Lesson.
(Not widely taught at leading Business Schools, we understand, but true none-the-less.)

We are still a bit mystified how anyone other than blood relations can start a business together and come out friends on the other end.  Yet, wide held knowledge claims it is most difficult to start and operate a business with family.  What do they know? Or is it what do we know?

This little lesson has come up time and time again.  The oldest sister, Teresa, has reached a pitch none of us have ever heard.  Alicia has cried more tears than we thought possible.  Michelle has, in her mind, made the ultimate sacrifice: Leaving New York for Sacramento and Elena has been surprisingly diplomatic.  Battles have been fought, resolutions reached and no one has been killed. Yet.

In the end we have put the nasty aside and moved beyond most of the fear.  We look back now and laugh and marvel at the fact that we still want to do this together; that our love as sisters can carry us through anything.  There is something so real about wanting to kill each other one moment and the next being so grateful we are in this life together.  We are business partners and sisters: A powerful combination and, we like to think, unstoppable!

The SECOND lesson?  Read next Tuesday's Blog where we will continue "The Good, The Bad and The Ugly" series.
