The Good, The Bad and The Ugly: Lesson #2

With any new business, the question we get asked most often is, “When will you be opening?” A simple enough question but an extremely difficult one to answer. Originally the answer was June 14th, then September 22nd, then October 13th.  We’re still not open and today is October 30th...

Lesson #2
The “Take Your Initial Grand Opening Date, Add 10 Visits to the City Permit Office, Tack on Half a Year for Good Measure and then You Might Actually Be Opening” Lesson.
(Equation subject to change depending on when our doors actually open)

Some businesses seem to pop-up overnight, a storefront vacant and within months it is filled.  That has not been the case for TEAMride. We were prepared for an October 13th opening: launched our website and all social media, went to local businesses with fliers and we even went so far as to announce this date to all of you!  Whoops, fake-out!

The point is, when you are starting a business, good intentions and the best laid plans don’t always sync-up with all the other factors outside of your control.  Some say, timing is everything.  We say, timing is tricky.  We made a mistake but we’re rolling with it.  To say it has been frustrating is an understatement.  We are so ready to bring TEAMride alive with all of you; to see our dream in reality.  In the meantime, time keeps ridin’ on and we do too!

Check back next Tuesday for Lesson #3. Click here to read Lesson #1 if you missed it!

GETTING TO KNOW THE TEAM

Today we highlight our second instructor on our "Getting to Know the TEAM" series.  As soon as we heard that Molly had moved to Sacramento to try something new, we knew we wanted that kind of spontaneity on our TEAM.  She is bringing the East Coast to Sacramento and we know you will all love her as much as we do!

Spotlight on Instructor, Molly Klores

Molly recently received a BS in Neuroscience and moved to Davis from Washington, D.C., to pursue veterinary medicine. She is thrilled to be a part of TEAMride because of her love of music as well as indoor cycling, and is excited to meet new people in the area! In her spare time, she enjoys running, drawing, and traveling (especially to beaches!).

1) If you could be any fictional character, who would you choose? Beatrix Kiddo from Kill Bill. I love her intensity and devotion to her daughter (and having Uma Thurman’s legs wouldn’t be too bad either)
2) If you were stranded on a lonely beach, what are the 5 things that you would want to survive? Assuming I couldn’t bring my friends and family, I would want: Anything that could play music, An infinite supply of white nectarines, My bike, A bath tub (with bubbles), My boxer, Nina
3) What is the #1 most played song on your iPod? You Can’t Always Get What You Want, by the Rolling Stones. My mom used to sing it to me when I was a kid!
4) If you could learn to do anything, what would it be? Ice-skate. It seems so elegant to me.
5) If you won the lottery, what is the 1st thing you would do? Plan a trip around the world.
6) What is one of your favorite quotes? “Every act of perception, is to some degree an act of creation, and every act of memory is to some degree an act of imagination.” – Oliver Sacks

The Good, The Bad and The Ugly

We’ve heard it all: “You girls are nuts!” “Do you have ANY idea how hard it is to own your own business?” “Do you even know what you’re doing?” To all this we say, “yes, we are a little nuts, it’s harder than we could have imagined and we’re learning everything necessary along the way.” The truth is, you have to be a little nuts to do this, and we’re okay with that.

For the next few weeks, we are going to highlight some of the biggest lessons we've learned while building TEAMride. Whether you aspire to one day own your own business or not, enjoy these tidbits from 4 sisters dreaming big.

LESSON #1:
The “Thank goodness we are sisters otherwise one of us would be dead” Lesson.
(Not widely taught at leading Business Schools, we understand, but true none-the-less.)

We are still a bit mystified how anyone other than blood relations can start a business together and come out friends on the other end.  Yet, wide held knowledge claims it is most difficult to start and operate a business with family.  What do they know? Or is it what do we know?

This little lesson has come up time and time again.  The oldest sister, Teresa, has reached a pitch none of us have ever heard.  Alicia has cried more tears than we thought possible.  Michelle has, in her mind, made the ultimate sacrifice: Leaving New York for Sacramento and Elena has been surprisingly diplomatic.  Battles have been fought, resolutions reached and no one has been killed. Yet.

In the end we have put the nasty aside and moved beyond most of the fear.  We look back now and laugh and marvel at the fact that we still want to do this together; that our love as sisters can carry us through anything.  There is something so real about wanting to kill each other one moment and the next being so grateful we are in this life together.  We are business partners and sisters: A powerful combination and, we like to think, unstoppable!

The SECOND lesson?  Read next Tuesday's Blog where we will continue "The Good, The Bad and The Ugly" series.

GETTING TO KNOW THE TEAM

Today we highlight our first instructor on our "Getting to Know the TEAM" series.  Within minutes of meeting Elise, we knew she was something special.  Her energy on and off the bike is contagious and we don't think we've ever seen her without a smile on her face!

Spotlight on Instructor, Elise Winbrock

Elise has been a sports enthusiast since she started playing soccer at age 3. She double majored at UC Davis in Psychology and Spanish and loved playing college soccer there as well. But after three knee surgeries she is more excited than ever about an amazing full body, non-impact sport as fun as TEAMride!

1) If you could be any fictional character, who would you choose? Hermione Granger- she's got sass and smarts!
2) If you were stranded on a lonely beach, what are the 5 things that you would want to survive? Dobie (my old dog), my family, Jack Johnson (the guy, not his CD), Bear Grylls (from Man vs. Wild), Sean Connery(because James Bond can get out of any problem)
3) What is the #1 most played song on your iPod? "Slide Along Side" Shifty
4) If you could learn to do anything, what would it be? Speak like Winston Churchill
5) If you won the lottery, what is the 1st thing you would do? Pay for grad school for my brothers and me, then take them with me to visit every South American country.
6) What is one of your favorite quotes? "In daily life we must see that it is not happiness that makes us grateful, but gratefulness that makes us happy" -Brother David Steindl-Rast

The Power of TEAM

At TEAMride we believe in the power of the group!  We believe each person is vital to the success of the ride.  Your perseverance and  energy are what help to elevate the TEAM (no pressure though!).

Here are 4 reasons working out as a part of the TEAM is better than going it alone:

FUN:

Let's face it, working out alone can be dull and monotonous.  Working out with a group to fabulous music helps elevate an ordinary workout into something extraordinary!  Our rides will transform your body and your mind : )

MOTIVATING:

The energy of a TEAMride class can help push you harder in your workout.  Not only do you feed off the energy and perseverance of the other riders but our instructors are there to give you that little extra push of encouragement.  There is nothing greater than seeing yourself improve, week to week.

SOCIAL:

Working out can be a social event.  Instead of a drink or dinner with a friend change up your routine.  Incorporate one workout date a week and see the difference that makes in both your lives.  Short on friends?  Meet new ones before and after class or get to know our friendly instructors!  Your workout community is waiting . . .

HEALTHY:

Of course there are health benefits.  The cardiovascular workout offered by indoor cycling is unparalleled and at TEAMride we throw in a bit of strength training for good measure.  You will walk away with a stronger more fit body all while having a blast!

Transform Your Life

CHALLENGE YOURSELF. CELEBRATE YOUR LIFE.

These are powerful words and they embody the vision of TEAMride.  Exercise can be a transformative experience in your life, especially when you find a workout that does more than just make you sweat.  A great workout that helps lead to lifelong health must CHALLENGE the body; it must push you beyond what you thought capable and into a powerful place of confidence.  At the same time, it must be worth returning to week in and week out; it must be a place of CELEBRATION.

When you CHALLENGE your body, new possibilities open up and create more experiences to CELEBRATE.  When you take the time to CHALLENGE your body life feels more manageable.  You become your best self.  That is what we strive for at TEAMride: to truly CHALLENGE you, in the most amazing way, so that you can go on and CELEBRATE the beauty of this life!
